Episode 81: Top 10 Ways to Naturally Boost Your Mood and Motivation

Listen In

Summary

Have you ever experienced this: You have a goal to lose weight. And even though reaching that goal would mean everything to you, even though you know how much more confident you would be in your relationship, even though you know you'd have more energy for your kids, even though you know how amazing it would be to feel good in your own skin again, you just can't get yourself to take action.

The days come and go and you just feel sluggish, apathetic, maybe even a little hopeless. You can't seem to hype yourself up or get enough motivation to start that new workout routine or to cook that healthy dinner. Procrastination seems to be the name of the game and you have no idea how to kick things into gear.

I've had many clients experience this and they get really down on themselves, feeling like they should be able to just do it already. They feel like a failure.

But this experience that we often perceive as a character flaw within ourselves can actually be a sign of a physical issue. In this case, I'm talking about low dopamine.

In case you don't know, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for motivation, productivity, focus, joy, and our human ability to think and plan. And when it's low, it's like tying the kite of your dreams and goals to a rock.

So instead of trying to berate ourselves into action, let's take a kinder, more productive approach with 10 ways to boost dopamine naturally.

10 Dopamine Boosters:

  1. Eating dopamine-boosting foods: almonds, avocados, bananas, beets, green leafy veggies, green tea, lima beans, oregano, peanuts, rosemary, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, turmeric, watermelon, protein
  2. Physical activity.
  3. Sunshine.
  4. Meditation. One study including eight experienced meditation teachers found a 64% increase in dopamine production after meditating for one hour, compared to when resting quietly.
  5. Creative hobbies.
  6. Music.
  7. Petting your dog.
  8. Massage.
  9. Cold Shower.
  10. Cross one thing off the to-do list.

While it is, of course, imperative that we know what to do to boost our dopamine levels, it's just as important that we avoid destructive behaviors that tend to inhibit dopamine production. Listen in to the full episode above if you want to know the top 6 dopamine disruptors you need to keep your eye on.
