Episode 206: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Healing: 9 Powerful Ways Castor Oil Boosts Your Wellbeing

 Listen In

Summary

In the realm of natural remedies, castor oil has long been praised for its therapeutic properties and health benefits. Derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), it's been used for centuries to treat a wide range of ailments and promote overall well-being.

I'll be honest, there are certain health practices that I've tended to glaze over as a practitioner and castor oil packs have fallen into that category for a long time.

That is until I recently discovered I have mold toxicity and estrogen dominance and need to move detoxification to the top of my priority list. It's funny how a new diagnosis will make you suddenly open to trying new things!

Luckily it's my lot in life to research, experiment, and share so you can cut to the chase on your own healing journey. So here we are.

Modern research has unveiled a treasure trove of healing components within castor oil, making it a staple in many households seeking a more natural approach to health and healing.

Castor oil is teeming with beneficial compounds that contribute to its impressive healing potential including fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, amino acids, terpenoids, and phytosterols. The combination of these elements can positively impact several symptoms and conditions.

1. Skin health.

The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities of castor oil make it a powerful ally in promoting healthy skin. When applied topically, it can soothe irritation, reduce redness, and aid in the healing process of wounds and blemishes.

A simple mixture of one part castor oil to three parts coconut oil can create an effective nightly moisturizer, or it can be directly applied to blemishes with a clean cotton swab.

For sunburn relief, a blend of equal parts castor oil and coconut oil can provide a soothing solution.

2. Detoxification and Hormone Balance.

Castor oil has hepatoprotective properties, meaning it can help shield the liver from damage and support its detoxification functions. By stimulating the lymphatic system, the oil aids in the elimination of toxins that the liver may have missed.

Additionally, castor oil supports blood flow to the liver, reducing inflammation and congestion and promoting the expulsion of old hormones, which is essential for hormone balance.

3. Antioxidant and Free Radical Scavenging.

The oil's antioxidant properties help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, contributing to overall cellular health and reducing oxidative stress. By scavenging these unstable molecules, castor oil can protect cells from damage and support longevity.

4. Accelerated Wound Healing.

Due to its wound-healing capabilities, castor oil is an excellent natural remedy for cuts, scrapes, and other skin injuries. When applied topically, it promotes tissue regeneration and minimizes scarring, facilitating a faster recovery process.

5. Improved Circulation.

By stimulating circulation, castor oil ensures that blood, nutrients, and oxygen are adequately delivered throughout the body. This improved circulation leads to faster wound healing, enhanced cognitive function, a healthier heart, and clearer skin.

6. Alleviation of Arthritis and Muscle Aches.

The anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil extend beyond skincare. When used as a massage oil, it can provide relief for individuals suffering from arthritis and muscle aches. Gently massaging the oil into the affected area every 3 hours can ease discomfort.

7. Hair Health.

The impact of castor oil on circulation, combined with its moisturizing properties, makes it an ideal treatment for promoting hair health and growth. Massaging the oil into the scalp and covering it with a cap overnight allows the hair and scalp to absorb the nutrients, resulting in stronger, more lustrous locks.

8. Relieving Constipation.

While castor oil can help with occasional constipation, it is essential to use it for short-term relief only. Long-term use may lead to adverse effects such as cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you're struggling with constipation, using castor oil sparingly might provide the relief you need.

Incorporating Castor Oil into Your Wellness Routine

As with any natural remedy, it's essential to use castor oil in moderation and consult a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns.

When using castor oil topically, it's best to perform a patch test before widespread application to ensure you don't have an allergic reaction. Always opt for organic, cold-pressed, and hexane-free castor oil to ensure the highest quality and purity.

You can purchase an already made pack or to make your own:

Ingredients and supplies

  • organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil
  • unbleached wool or cotton flannel
  • medium container or bowl
  • tongs
  • scissors
  • plastic sheeting, such as a small tablecloth or garbage bag

Directions

  1. Cut the wool or cotton flannel into rectangular pieces, about 12 inches by 10 inches. You can also cut them into strips or smaller squares depending on where you’ll use them.
  2. Use at least three to four pieces of cloth to make a pack.
  3. Pour castor oil into the container. You should be able to completely soak a piece of the wool or cotton flannel in the castor oil.
  4. Drop one piece of the cloth into the oil until it’s completely soaked.
  5. Use the tongs to pick up the cloth in the container. It should be dripping with castor oil.
  6. Lay the soaked cloth flat on the plastic sheet.
  7. Soak the other two or more pieces of cloth in the same way.
  8. Add the oil-soaked cloths flat on top of the first one.
  9. Once you’ve soaked and layered each cloth, you’ve made a castor oil pack.
  10. Place the cloth on the area of treatment and cover with saran wrap.
  11. Leave pack in place 45-90 minutes or overnight.
