Picture this: It's the weekend. All week long you've been doing so well with you're eating, getting your workouts in, doing your self care. But here you are, elbow deep in a bag of greasy potato chips, asking yourself, "Why do I keep doing this to myself?"

Or maybe your problem isn't binging on the weekends. Maybe you're sitting at a restaurant with friends and family. Everyone is having a good time, ordering delicious food and enjoying a cocktail, and you're sitting there with your dry salad and lemon water because your diet dictates that that's your only choice, and you ask yourself, "Why do I keep doing this to myself?"

Or possibly, you've been consistent with your habits for a while now, but the scale isn't going down as fast as you want, and day in and day out you berate yourself and the way you look, and finally you pause long enough to ask yourself, "Why do I keep doing this to myself?"

We all have an image in our mind of the person we want to be, the kinds of decisions we want to make, the kind of life we want to live, and yet every day we do things completely out of alignment with that vision and then get frustrated about how stuck we are.

Which is why today I'm going to share some powerful journal prompts to get to the root of the question 'why do I keep doing this to myself?' so you can finally have the clarity to move forward, break these unhealthy patterns, and finally achieve your goals without getting in your own way.

  • The habit/action that I keep repeating is ...

  • The thoughts that usually precede this habit are...

  • The emotions that usually precede this habit are...

  • How is this habit different from other habits I've been able to stop?

  • When did this habit start? Why do I think it started then?

  • What are the benefits of maintaining this habit?

  • What are the drawbacks of maintaining this habit?

  • What lies am I telling myself that makes this habit feel impossible to avoid?

So much of what we do is on autopilot and it leads us to the same destination over and over again.

By answering these questions truthfully, thoroughly, and thoughtfully, you'll incite the awareness you need to consciously pick a new route, and finally reach the destination you've been searching for.
