Episode 280: Kat Rates Today’s Top 10 Nutrition Trends - Part 1

Navigating the world of nutrition these days feels like assembling a puzzle with pieces from different boxes—some fit, some almost fit, and some make you question if you’re even working on the right picture.

You can have world renowned experts preaching opposite nutrition philosophies - yet both make great arguments, both seem logical, and both have a slew of studies backing their claims.

So how are you supposed to make any decisions? How do you know worthy pursuits from time-wasters? How do you avoid spending money on more snake oil?

The brutal truth is, no one has all the right answers that will apply to every person out there. Myself included.

We all are interpreting it through our own lens with the information available to us. With that said, this is how I approach interpreting and teaching nutrition:

1. I never draw conclusions from one study.

Studies are filled with bias, special interests, and confounding factors that make it extremely hard to pinpoint a universal truth. Instead I try to take the 30,000 foot view and see the themes arising.

2. I don’t jump on trends.

It takes time to really see how new products and ways of eating affect us. I prefer to sit back and observe while everyone else is scurrying around following the latest hype.

3. I pay close attention to gender-specific studies.

Women are not small men. And the amount of nutrition and biohacking trends that are beneficial to men but detrimental to women are staggering. Yet these hacks and habits are spread to the masses without any nuanced conversations about who they’re actually good for.

4. I prefer science over studies.

Studies have been proven and disproven a thousand times over over the years (remember when fat made you fat), it was recommended women be excluded from clinical trials until the 1990s, and as I mentioned earlier, many studies are skewed depending on who funded said studies. So while studies can be helpful, they are rife with inaccuracies.

But the science of understanding the human body and being able to draw conclusions based on that knowledge? That I trust.

For example, we know that cortisol suppresses thyroid production, and we know that fasted workouts drive up cortisol more than postprandial workouts. So concluding that fasted workouts aren’t great for hypothyroid women is good enough science for me. I don’t need a singular study to validate it.

5. I apply common sense.

Seeing nutrition practices on-mass in the real world, in my opinion, is the single most accurate way to learn about the true effects of food choices on the human body.

Which is why you could give me a hundred studies that say plants have anti-nutrients and are bad for us, but I will literally never believe it. Because every country in the world with the best health and longest lives eat mostly plants.

Now that you know where I’m coming from, you can decide whether or not I’m the voice for you. But I do recommend picking one or two voices in this space that make sense to you and blocking out the rest. Otherwise it quickly turns into a too-many-chefs-in-the-kitchen scenario.

If I am the voice you want to listen to, join me in this 2-part episode series as I rate these top 10 nutrition trends on a scale of 1-10.
