Episode 60: 3 MUST DO'S to Lose Weight with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

In my early years of hypothyroidism, before I was even aware I had Hashimoto’s, I hated my body. I despised the little ring of fat around my tummy, my soft arms, and the stretch marks starting to form on my inner thighs. 

But I’m no victim, I wasn’t going to just stand there and let my thyroid dictate what I looked like. So I got to work. 2-a-day workouts were my norm, combining strength and cardio to burn off every bit of fat I could. I treated carbs like they were the enemy, waiting for me to make one false move to infiltrate my non-existent abs.

But no matter what I did, the weight stuck. It didn’t matter how hard I tried, how many fitness magazines I read, or how many cleanses I followed, my body seemed determined to stay forever fluffy.

And I’ve known so many other hashimoto's warriors going through the exact same thing, fighting the good fight, but seemingly unable to win. 

The good news? If you’ve been in this war, you don’t have to keep exhausting yourself, swinging that heavy sword. You have to realize that the battle plan that others use, simply isn’t the right battle plan for you. You’ve been working harder, but I want to share how you can work smarter with these 3 steps you HAVE to take if you want to lose weight with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

  1. Heal your gut. 

Hypothyroidism can both cause, and be caused by leaky gut syndrome. And when this is the issue (and in virtually all cases of Hashimoto’s, it is), it can lead to inflammation, food cravings, and a mis-firing of the satiety hormone leptin, making you less able to tell when you’re truly full.

  1. Focus on firing up your metabolism.

Two of the main reasons hashimoto’s leads to weight gain are it makes you retain water, and it slows down your metabolism. This is where so many women get caught in the dieting game. They’re being told by doctors they just need to eat less, meanwhile they’re already restricting like crazy, which ends up leading to decreased thyroid output, increased cortisol, suppressed immune function, and you guessed it, an even slower metabolism.

  1. Make stress management a TOP priority. 

This was made more clear than ever with my client CK who also has hashimoto’s. At first her body responded really well to high intensity workouts, but eventually the stress of it registered in her body and she hit a plateau. 

We switched her over to a yoga-focused workout plan with just a couple high intensity days thrown in and suddenly she was dropping weight effortlessly.

When you have an autoimmune disease, your body is particularly sensitive to stressors which can quickly dump a surplus of cortisol into the system, effectively putting a halt to your weight loss goals. 

If I had known just these 3 things to focus on, I would’ve saved myself YEARS of heartache and frustration. So I hope it gives you some hope that you CAN have the body you want even with a thyroid disorder.
