Episode 97: 10 Things to Stop F***ing Saying if You're Serious About Losing Weight

We’re all guilty of it. We tell ourselves half-truths, give ourselves little excuses, allow ourselves get-out-of-jail-free cards for why we can’t achieve our goals.

But if we can get brutally honest, we’ll realize more often than not that little voice isn’t a voice of reason. It’s a voice of fear. And it wants to keep you nice and safe in your beautifully designed comfort zone where nothing has to change, and yet the imagined future is full of possibilities and hope.

And these are some of that Inner Fear’s favorite hits:

“I don’t have time.”

We all have the same amount of time and there will always be someone busier than you who’s still taking care of themselves. You can figure it out.

“I’m not motivated enough.”

No one feels motivated all the time. Stop relying on motivation and start tapping into your discipline.

“I’m too tired.”

This is not an excuse to not take care of your body. This is a REASON to get your sleep, eat your veggies, drink your water, move your body, and watch your energy skyrocket.

“It’s too hard.”

It’s hard being unhealthy, sick, overweight, tired, and insecure. It’s also hard taking care of your body every day. Choose which hard is worth it.

"It's not a good time right now."

Hate to break it to you, life is never going to ease up, and it's never going to be a 'good time'. And even if life does throw you a bone, it won't stay easy for long, and what then? Figure out how to do it when it isn't convenient. That's the only way you'll know it'll actually stick through all the inevitable ups and downs.

"My kids like to have junk in the house/keep me too busy/need me too much right now/fill in the blank."

Ya'll, I love you parents and I know you have the hardest job in the world. But stop using your kids as an excuse to be unhealthy. You decide what food is in your house. You set the example. And your kids should be a reason to take care of yourself. They will model your behavior. Do you want them repeating the same cycle you're in with food and exercise?

"I've tried so many times, it just doesn't work for me."

When a reporter asked Thomas Edison, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn't fail 1,000 times. The lightbulb was an invention that took 1,000 steps." Each failure is an opportunity for you to learn what didn't work for you. Just don't keep going back to the same BS diets again and again.

"I don't like vegetables. / I don't like working out."

First question: have you tried ALL veggies and ALL workouts? If not, this statement is untrue. You dislike some veggies and some workouts. Keep trying until you find the ones you like. Also, what would you do if your kid said they didn't like veggies? Would you stop feeding them veggies? Nope, you'd make them keep eating them until they at least tolerated them.

"I have hashimotos/hypothyroidism/a slow metabolism/bad genes."

I'm not saying that certain conditions and genes don't make it harder to lose weight, they can. But harder doesn't mean impossible. And frankly, this mindset usually causes people to not go all in with healthy habits because they automatically assume they won't work. And that is what leads to lack of results more than anything. 

"I don’t know where to start.”

Hire a coach, read a book, search on google, or simply start with something you KNOW you should be doing like eating more veggies. There’s no magic formula. Just start somewhere. And if you want me to help you make it real easy, click here to book a free consultation!
