Episode 150: Can Food Sensitivities Impact Your Weight??

Listen In

Summary

When I was a young dancer, all I wanted was the body to match the hobby.

I looked at the toned abs of my older sister with envy and lamented the soft stomach I saw highlighted in my leotard.

At the time I was dancing regularly and working out outside of classes. I was constantly reading nutrition books, jumping on and off diets, promising myself I wouldn't eat pretzels, carbs, sugar, fill-in-the-blank.

It seemed no matter what I did, I would never have the body I dreamed of.

Then in college I went to my first functional medicine doctor who had me take a food sensitivities test.

The list was 5 pages long. Small print.

This was the first indication that something was seriously wrong with my gut.

Basically what happened was I was eating foods that were damaging to my gut, this lead to inflammation and loose junctures in my gut lining (a condition known as leaky gut), which allowed food particles to escape into my blood stream.

When this happens your body goes on attack and releases antibodies to attack those food particles, leading to more food sensitivities.

It took me a number of months but after finally healing my gut lining, eliminating the foods I was sensitive to, and rebuilding my gut microbiome, the weight around my midsection all but fell off.

How can food sensitivities wreak such havoc?

First let's talk about what food sensitivities are exactly. A food sensitivity is when you have an immune response to certain foods.

This is different from a food intolerance which is where you have a hard time breaking down certain foods (like lactose intolerance), or from a food allergy which is another type of immune system response but it usually is more serious and can't be fixed.

  • gas
  • bloating
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • seasonal allergies
  • heartburn
  • stomach ache
  • nausea
  • undigested food in stool
  • skin issues like eczema and acne
  • brain fog
  • headaches or migraines
  • mood issues like mild depression and anxiety
  • weight gain
  • ADD
  • malnutrition
  • autoimmune diseases

Now you may be wondering, but how can an immune reaction influence my weight??

  1. Because the antibodies our body produces in response to food sensitivities affect fat metabolism and other metabolic processes in our body.
  2. If food sensitivities are causing symptoms like lethargy, brain fog, depression, and headaches, chances are you are not going to have the energy for consistent workouts.
  3. When food sensitivities cause damage to your gut, your hunger and satiety hormones can be disrupted leading you to overeat. And your gut becomes compromised, making it easier for pathogenic bacteria to take over and cause uncontrollable sugar and carb cravings.

The good news? You can pinpoint exactly what your food sensitivities are, get rid of food sensitivities, restore your gut lining, and repopulate your gut microbiome with the good bacteria that help you lose weight.
