Episode 270: 10 Female-Friendly Biohacks from World Renowned Hormone Experts

Optimizing health looks different for men than it does for women (particularly hypothyroid women in their reproductive years). 😱

The very “hacks” that leave men feeling energized and lean - cold plunges and 16+ hour fasts come to mind - are actually detrimental for our far more sensitive hormonal systems.

So what should WE do if we want to biohack our way to healthier hormones and slower aging?

I sifted through all my lecture notes from The Health Optimization Summit where I got to see some of the world’s leading experts on hormone health and longevity (think Josh Axe, Ben Greenfield, Alisa Vitti, Gary Brecka, Amie Hornaman, and Max Lugavere to name a few) and came up with this list:

1. Movement snacks.

Small bursts of movement scattered throughout the day can improve your metabolic health, circulation, energy, and blood sugar balance.

In fact, doing 10 squats every hour is more effective at balancing blood sugar than doing one 30-minute walk.

You’ll get even greater benefit if you can crank up the intensity with moves like squat jumps, mountain climbers, burpies, or running the stairs.

2. Cycle syncing.

I do this somewhat intuitively but being 33, single, AND hypothyroid, I want to preserve my fertility as long as possible so I’m dialing this up a notch.

What is it? Strategically aligning your workouts and nutrition with your menstrual cycle to optimize hormone health and drastically reduce PMS symptoms.

3. Starting the day on the oxytocin train > the cortisol train.

Think: trading screen time for something that feels ‘yummy’... puppy snuggles, stretching, deep breathing, journaling, walking in the sunlight, etc.

By avoiding the cortisol train we set our bodies up for better blood sugar management, more restful sleep, fewer energy dips, and even fewer cravings throughout the day.

4. Longevity burpees.

This exercise promotes functional strength (the kind of strength that allows you to not throw your back out when you pick up a heavy suitcase when you’re older) while also improving cardiovascular health.

Ben Greenfield had us do this as many times as possible in 60 seconds and I have to admit it was harder (and funnier) than I imagined.

Sit down on the floor with your legs extended in front of you, tuck your feet under you, stand up, and then sit back down in your starting position as quickly as possible.
